This event is organized in partnership with Yale Library and the Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions.

Overview

In this 90-minute, hands-on workshop, participants will learn the building blocks of effective storytelling with maps and geographic data. The session will begin with best practices for planning and outlining a digital narrative, then move into assembling a story using ArcGIS StoryMaps.

Participants can use provided content or bring their own project to work on during the session. The workshop will cover:

  • Core techniques for digital storytelling
  • Common story structures and principles of visual design
  • Advanced workflows for geospatial storytelling
  • Resources to continue developing StoryMaps skills

Instructor

Ross Donihue (YSE MEM ’18)
Lead Content Strategist, Esri StoryMaps

Ross Donihue leads a team of professional writers, cartographers, and visual designers at Esri. His work applies geography and systems thinking to enhance geospatial technology and empower global users to tell compelling, map-based stories.

Before joining Esri in 2018, Ross founded Map for Good, a visual storytelling studio that has collaborated with organizations including National Geographic Society, Patagonia, NOAA, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He is also a National Geographic Explorer and holds a Master of Environmental Management from the Yale School of the Environment.

Requirements

  • Participants may bring their own content or use materials provided during the session.
  • Marx Classroom has desktop computers available, but attendees are welcome to bring a laptop.
