Geospatial CoP: Accessing, Evaluating, and Analyzing PlanetScope Imagery

Flyer Sat - teaser

This event has passed.

Join us for a hands-on workshop on Planet Labs satellite imagery, with a focus on accessing, evaluating, and analyzing PlanetScope's daily 3-meter resolution data.

Participants will:
• Get an introduction to Planet Labs, including a brief overview of its broader product line (e.g., higher-resolution SkySat imagery and composite analytic products like Tropical Forest Observatory), before focusing in on PlanetScope's daily, 3-meter resolution imagery (~15 minutes)
• Explore the different ways to access PlanetScope data, including Planet Explorer, ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, R, and the Planet API (~30 minutes)
• Learn how to use the Planet API to evaluate imagery before downloading — using the Usable Data Mask (UDM2) and metadata like clear/cloud percent to check for sufficient cloud-free coverage before committing to a download (~30 minutes)
• Use the API to search for, filter, and pull PlanetScope data, then process it to calculate NDVI and other useful indices, such as NDRE, EVI, and NDWI (~30 minutes)
• Work hands-on with real PlanetScope imagery and sample Python code throughout (~1.25 hours)
