Equipment Rental

Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions offer a wide range of equipment available for checkout to Yale-affiliated students, faculty, and staff. Items are organized into three tiers based on complexity and required experience.

Tier 1 items are the most accessible and can be checked out without prior training. Tier 2 and Tier 3 items require verified experience, with higher tiers potentially needing a brief orientation or proof of proficiency. For Tiers 2 & 3 equipment, if renter or Yale-affiliated person is flying the drone*, then we require proof of insurance on the unit(s), so that a replacement can be purchased in the event of an accident. We also require the renter to file all of the appropriate paperwork and insurance claims.

All equipment is free to use for educational or research purposes, as long as users manage operation, data collection, and processing independently, and the number of days is limited. Most requests are processed within 2-5 business days. Requests must be made at least 2 weeks in advance of rental start date.

Important Caveats

Equipment checkout and rental are available only during EOL open hours, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Renters are responsible for scheduling checkout and return times within those windows with EOL Staff to ensure staff are available and in the lab when you checkout and return the equipment. You should schedule checkout and return times at least 1 week prior to start date of your rental.

*Please note that any drone or UAS system manufactured or assembled by a covered foreign entity (e.g., DJI) may not be used in connection with a federally funded project, even if the drone was originally purchased with non-federal funds.
