Austin Madson

Remote Sensing Supervisor

Austin Madson is a Remote Sensing Scientist within the YCGS framework who brings expertise from both academia and industry to his research. After earning his PhD from UCLA, he served as Assistant Professor at the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC) in the University of Wyoming’s School of Computing, where he developed and taught courses on remote sensing, UAVs, and spatial data processing.

As a physical geographer specializing in Earth and environmental science, Austin investigates complex interactions across the hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere. His research combines advanced remote sensing techniques with computational modeling and field instrumentation to tackle novel questions spanning these interconnected Earth systems. His background in spatial data analytics and field methods enables him to bridge theoretical concepts with practical applications.

Beyond academia, Austin founded Mad Nadir Mapping, a drone lidar manufacturing company, and serves as Associate Editor at Lidar Magazine where he helps run the Lidar Magazine Podcast Series. When not immersed in research or entrepreneurial ventures, he enjoys tinkering, playing soccer, and exploring the outdoors with his family.
