David Vasquez

Student Lab and Research Assistant

David is a sophomore in Yale College hailing from Los Angeles, California and majoring in Mathematics. While he loves theoretical mathematics, his heart lies with cities and considers himself an urban scientist. His research interests center around the interplay between the built environment, human behavior, and sustainability. He’s very interested in using data and computational methods to address novel urban, transportation, and climate problems. He’s also curious about the effects of urbanization on a global scale. At the Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions, David is excited to use cutting-edge machine learning models to calculate carbon sequestration in temperate forests using satellite imagery.

In summer 2024, David got the opportunity to study abroad in Lima, Peru and had the time of his life soaking in the spirit of the city! He loves studying and visiting cities and wants to go to as many as possible. David is also a member of the Livable City Lab, under the direction of Professor Arianna Salazar-Miranda in the School of Environment. For the Livable City Lab, he is working on an urban mobility project that aims to analyze GPS data to investigate why people live so far from the key destinations they most want to visit. During summer 2025, David will be a Scarf Fellow working with Professor Luke Sanford on a project that involves using machine learning models to predict metrics like population density and wealth from satellite imagery of Kenya.
