Skye Hellenkamp is a PhD student at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE), working with Dr. Paulo Brando. She received a Master of Environmental Science (MESc) at YSE, and her Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the University of South Alabama. Skye’s research uses satellite and drone remote sensing to study the impacts of deforestation and forest fragmentation in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. She uses thermal imagery to assess the vulnerability of forest edges to heat and drought stress. Skye’s geospatial experience ranges from satellite remote sensing to hands-on drone operations, including flight planning, data collection, image processing, and spatial analysis to support environmental research.
