Satellite

The Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions and the Yale Library are pleased to launch the Yale Remote Sensing Accelerator, a new training program coming in June 2025. This week-long program (June 9–13) offers direct instruction and hands-on experience in processing satellite imagery.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Develop fundamental GIS skills including use of various data types, data management, attribute tables, and coordinate systems.
  • Use ArcGIS Pro to visualize and analyze imagery.
  • Use intermediate-level raster analysis techniques. Use USGS Earth Explorer to download imagery.
  • Understand criteria for choosing satellite imagery.
  • Use USGS Earth Explorer to select and download imagery.
  • Gain a basic understanding of the electro-magnetic spectrum.
  • Practice good data management.
  • Understand spectral signatures and compute spectral indices.
  • Perform image classification in ArcGIS Pro and evaluate its output.
  • Calculate and visualize change over time.
  • Visualize imagery in 3D.

* Trainees who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate.

PRE-REQUISITES
Participants must have basic familiarity with Windows file operationsUse of ArcGIS Pro will be taught in the first two days of the course.

LEAD INSTRUCTOR

Jill Kelly is the primary GIS instructor at the Yale School of Public Health. She has also taught GIS at Yale School of Architecture, the Government Department of Harvard University, Harvard’s Center for Geographic Analysis, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Environmental Studies Program. Her research focuses on the development and application of GIS and other spatial methods to study environmental phenomena. Jill is a geospatial generalist with interests in morphology, areal aggregation, and raster analysis. Her dissertation research explored the spatial aggregation of lidar measurements in predicting spatially explicit estimates of forest biomass.
